Surfacing
Surfacing
Surfacing, along with sibling pieces Ribbon Flow and Breakthrough, was an opportunity for me to understand and leverage the unique properties of granulating watercolors. These paints contain small particles of the colored pigment, often more than one color, that separate out and settle into the nooks and crannies of watercolor paper to give fascinating patterns and texture.
In Surfacing, I was fascinated by the rich moodiness of the blues and turquoise. It felt like I was deep in the ocean, or even deeply asleep, and just beginning to connect with the world again, surfacing to find the light. I particularly like the three light circles in the center, like an alien light source reaching out through the distance.
Although each work stands in its own right, I designed them to also work as a tryptic with connecting veins and color segments.
