Ribbon Flow
Ribbon Flow
Ribbon Flow, along with sibling pieces Surfacing and Breakthrough, was an opportunity for me to understand and leverage the unique properties of granulating watercolors. These paints contain small particles of the colored pigment, often more than one color, that separate out and settle into the nooks and crannies of watercolor paper to give fascinating patterns and texture.
In Ribbon Flow, the pigments felt very geological, like rocks and strata cutting back through time itself. I loved the way the splashes of translucent warm burnt sienna browns brought a flow and a rhythm to the implied landscape. This was the first time also that I used colored inks, matched in the same color palette as the paint.
Although each work stands in its own right, I designed them to also work as a tryptic with connecting veins and color segments.
