Across the Lake — watercolor painting of a serene early morning view across the water to a remote coastline by CJ Hassall

About the Artist

I have always loved bold and vibrant colors, and that passion shows up in every piece I create. My work is a mix of careful planning and spontaneous moments, where the paint itself often helps decide the final result.

I mostly work with watercolor and ink. I prefer watercolor because of how it moves; I love the way it blends and shifts to create the kind of unexpected patterns you see in nature. My process usually starts with soft, see-through layers of color to find the right composition. From there, I add ink and more paint as the idea comes into focus. I try to guide the process while also letting the materials tell their own story as they dry.

I find inspiration in the landscapes around me, like misty mornings, rolling hills, and the way light changes through the seasons. I’m interested in positive and negative shapes and the subtle colors found in both real and imagined places. For me, painting is a way to connect with the world and capture a feeling into something others can see and experience with me.

My work has been selected for regional and national juried Fine Art exhibitions, recognized for both technical skill and emotional connection.
