Breakthrough

Breakthrough, along with sibling pieces Surfacing and Ribbon Flow, was an opportunity for me to understand and leverage the unique properties of granulating watercolors.  These paints contain small particles of the colored pigment, often more than one color, that separate out and settle into the nooks and crannies of watercolor paper to give fascinating patterns and texture. 

In Breakthrough, I wanted to the warmth of the burnt sienna to dominate but still have an anchor in both the rugged geology of Ribbon Flow and the moody depths of Surfacing.  This piece feels to me literally as though we have broken through and found the surface of a new world.

Although each work stands in its own right, I designed them to also work as a tryptic with connecting veins and color segments.
