Orchestrating the Midday Sun

I came across this huge dinner plate dahlia one hot summer day. It was around noon, and what caught my eye was that the sun seemed to be dancing around and through and under the heavy mop of petals at the top of the flower. The underside was lush and pink, and in front there was an acid lime green and yellow bud — full of promise of more glory to come.

Orchestrating the Midday Sun is my attempt at capturing that moment in watercolor. I used the white of the paper to represent the sun kissed petals, and cool pinks with ultramarine glazing to convey the depth of the underbelly. My favorite part is the lemon green bud, which draws the eye towards the future — waxy and opulent.
