Great Blue
Great Blue
This painting was a commission from a lady who wanted a fairly traditional rendition of a Great Blue Heron. We happen to have a lot of these where we live, so it was a fun but challenging piece.
Although white watercolor paint does exist, to me the best way to have white in a picture is to preserve the white of the paper, which means to get form in white you really need to paint around it, calling out the negative shapes in the folds and creases. I took a lot of time trying to get the eye right, and then in getting a realistic vision of the white feathers. It was also important to have the background recede so that the bird really looks like he is in the scene but is the main attraction. I was very happy with the way it turned out, and more importantly so was my collector.
