For weeks it ran out of control. I had recently painted a scene from that same area — the \u003ca href=\"\/products\/bridge-over-elk-creek\"\u003e\u003cem\u003eBridge Over Elk Creek\u003c\/em\u003e\u003c\/a\u003e — and learned the whole valley was under threat.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003e\u003cem\u003eNot Contained\u003c\/em\u003e is my response to that fire. Angry reds and searing heat press in from the distance. Charred black and purple trees stand in the foreground, stripped and peeling. Hot yellow and red washes pull the composition together, while intricate ink work traces the scorched, curling bark. I wanted to depict a truly stately creature, The King, in all his gorgeous glory. I focused on representing his head, neck and upper body in luminous reality.
